Frequently asked questions
Legal Aid
I am often asked if I will represent someone on Legal Aid. As of 2022, with the exception of murder cases and already established clients I will no longer be accepting legal aid. There are several reasons for this, the tariff (fee paid) is often inadequate on some charges, additionally travelling outside Winnipeg has been curtailed and in most cases milage will not be paid eating into the value of what Legal Aid will pay me. I want to dedicate the hours necessary to properly represent my clients and sadly this is not realistic on a Legal Aid Certificate.
I will provide you with an initial consultation at no charge and review your case. I will explain my fees in detail and if you wish to continue with me I will then provide you with a detailed retainer agreement.
My job is to properly represent my clients and to do that to the best of my ability.
What does it cost for you to represent me?
I have indicated in this website that I insist that you do your own due diligence and check the costs involved in hiring other lawyers. As I have previously mentioned, you will find my fees competitive and comparable to many. Prior to you paying me anything I will offer you a free consultation and can then discuss fees and options but only if you want me to continue.
If you want to retain my services I initially take a retainer to begin work on your matter, usually $1,000. I then attend your first court date, place myself on the record and file paperwork such as a designation of counsel. I also obtain disclosure from the Crown Attorney’s Office, ascertain who Crown Counsel is that has been assigned to your case and then both you and I will meet to review the evidence. When we know what we are dealing with I will detail the costs involved. If you cannot make the full retainer, dependent upon circumstances I often allow my clients to pay in instalments as long as all the fees are paid at least 4 months prior to trial. This should not be burdensome as usually a trial is many months down the road. This will all be explained in detail with a retainer agreement provided.

"When I went into internal affairs and saw what was going on, I had no idea," he said. "I was working 28 years with blinders on ... I thought, you know what, maybe I should start seeing the other side ... Maybe these people deserve a little bit more in terms of representation and having someone look at their cases with a fresh set of eyes that knows."
