Testimonials
I first met James Lowry through my brother. My brother is a hard working man, an amazing father and unfortunately was accused of a crime he was innocent of.
James is professional and I absolutely appreciated his up front honesty with us from the very beginning. He made no promises or guarantees but I was more then confident he would do his very best and he far exceeded any expectations we had.
He is an amazing lawyer and I truly believe that his life experience is exactly what sets him apart from any other lawyer. He was with the Toronto police service for 33 years and with that he brings a different perspective of the justice system to the courtroom.
This was close to two years from the charge to the start of the trial and James was there every step of the way. He was in constant contact with my brother and was great at preparing him for the preliminary hearing and then the trial.
Heading into the trial wasn't something we knew how to prepare for because we have never done that, so to have some one leading our way was comforting during a very stressful time for us.
James gave more then a hundred percent during this trial and showed his professionalism each and every day. I could see just how much work he put into this on his end and I couldn't have asked for more. He was up against two crown attorneys and was able to score us a full acquittal.
When we where in the courtroom I was amazed by his passion and presence when he speaks.
There is a conviction in his voice and he is good at what he does. I can say that I am thrilled I met him, grateful he defended my brother, and honoured to say I know James Lowry.
If you are looking for someone to defend you know that with James you are going to get a hard working, dedicated, intelligent man who will give your case a hundred percent. He will be honest with you no matter what and in a time when you are facing the unknown honesty is priceless.
My family and I would like to thank James for the countless hours he put into this case. You have made a permanent imprint on our lives and no words can ever express our true gratitude for what you've done.

"I was the victim of wrongful and serious accusations and facing a mandatory minimum sentence in jail. I did not have a criminal record and my work would never accept me having a conviction of this sort. I was put on reduced hours and truly thought that my life was over.
I had heard about James and arranged to see him. I was extremely impressed by his background and the fact that he had been to three universities, one of which he completed his Master’s of Law at.
There are not many lawyers in Winnipeg that have his education, let alone 33 years of law enforcement experience. Both my partner and I were extremely worried about our future.
James told me that he was the one that did the worrying and not me, and several times spoke with me on the phone or had me into his office to discuss my case. This is where I saw his ability as a former Toronto Police Detective Sergeant come into play as he assessed the weaknesses and strength of the Crown’s case.
The day of the trial I was nervous, hadn’t slept and was extremely anxious… that was until the trial began. Very slowly I began to realize that things were going my way and then at the end of the day I heard the Judge say, “I have a reasonable doubt and because of that I must acquit the accused.”
James looked at me, smiled and said, “It is all over”.
It was an extraordinary feeling realizing that I had my life back."

"I was facing my second impaired conviction at one of the worst times of my life.
My partner had just gone through a bout of cancer and her mother was facing that horrible disease too. The Crown was instant upon me going to jail and I was about to lose my job because of this. I called James Lowry in Winnipeg as I knew of his background and ability in handling DUI cases.
James took on my case and within days had an Ottawa lawyer do the filings and arrange the Crown pre-trial while receiving disclosure. Any time I needed to talk with him he was available and we had a number of conversations over the telephone. James also began discussions with the Crown’s Office here.
James flew out to Ottawa early and met me a day before the trial, reserving a room in the University of Ottawa’s Law School.
He prepared me for court and put me through a mock cross examination and spent the entire afternoon with me.
Once in Court and the trial was underway James set the Crown’s case on fire and exposed non disclosure and Charter violations.
The Judge began to side with him and by the end of the first day I realized that I had made the right decision in hiring him.
The next morning it was over, I kept my job and my liberty. As I left the Courthouse it was humorous to see a couple of the Ottawa lawyers approach James and say, “You’re that prairie lawyer, can we talk."

I was a second year science student at university and was arrested in my car on the way home one day. My car was torn apart by a number of police officers, it was then towed and I was taken to police headquarters. I was placed into a room and was then told that they would be executing a search warrant on my house. Sometime later a police officer came into the room and told me that they had found a sizable amount of cocaine, packaging material, paraphernalia, scales residue and names of things that I had never heard of before. I was told that I was being charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and then told I could call a lawyer. I didn’t know a lawyer and they called legal aid, the lawyer I spoke with sounded young and I was just stunned. Then the police officer went to work and had me on video, I didn’t know what to do so I told him what happened because I was told that if I cooperated I could probably go home. Then next thing I knew was that a Crown attorney said that on an early guilty plea I would be going to jail for 22 months. I had no criminal record and had never been in jail before. I spoke with some lawyers and they had said it didn’t look good because of the search warrant, the statement I gave and I had better get my things in order.
Then I remember hearing about this lawyer here in Winnipeg, he had been this Internal Affairs Sergeant in the Toronto police and had had investigated this huge drug squad. He had a lot of experience and when I found him and started reading about him I had to talk with him. We met, he began going through the police paperwork. He would pause, take notes and then just stare at me. Then he would continue, ask me questions and then there was the hint of a smile. He told me that he would love to do my case so I retained him. Weeks later he had a huge bound book that was the size of a telephone book and said it was a motion argument. I read it and it was all about what happened to me but it keep referring to important cases. He filed it in the courthouse and a few weeks later I got a call from him. He said Santa Clause truly had come early. I asked him why and he told me based on his written argument the Crown would pull my trafficking charge and let me plead to simple possession for a fine. I have never been so relieved in my life. What an absolutely fantastic feeling getting my life back and not going to jail for close to two years, This guy is phenomenal.

"When I went into internal affairs and saw what was going on, I had no idea," he said. "I was working 28 years with blinders on ... I thought, you know what, maybe I should start seeing the other side ... Maybe these people deserve a little bit more in terms of representation and having someone look at their cases with a fresh set of eyes that knows." ~ James Edward Lowry
